City of Los Angeles The Reseda Neighborhood Council is located in the City of Los Angeles (LA). LA is the second largest city in the United States and home to 89 Neighborhood Councils. Los Angeles began as a farming community, a Spanish pueblo on the west bank of the Los Angeles River. Ceremonies founding the village of just over 40 settlers took place on September 4, 1781 and were part of the Spanish plans for the colonization of California. Don Felipe de Neve, California's Spanish Governor, joined Father Junipero Serra in founding the pueblo for the King of Spain. They gave it the name El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora la Reina de Los Angeles de Porciuncula (the City of Our Lady the Queen of the Angels of Porciuncula). Over time, they became known as the Ciudiad de Los Angeles, City of Angels. By April 4, 1850, when the City of Los Angeles was incorporated, it had grown to a population of over 1,600 people, and an area of 28 square miles. There were no sidewalks, no street lights, and no graded streets. Today the City of Los Angeles encompasses 469 square miles and, with a population of more than 3.6 million people, it is the second largest City in the nation. The City's boundaries extend from Sylmar on the north, to San Pedro on the south, and from Pacific Palisades to El Sereno. Visit the Los Angeles Department of Neighborhood Empowerment (DONE)
